efore there was Star Wars, before there was Close Encounters of the Third Kind, there was Heavy Metal magazine introducing you to the future.
In 1977, National Lampoon Communications bought the rights to publish a few excerpts from a French illustrated fantasy magazine entitled Metal Hurlant. It was a natural for the National Lampoon style of publishing. As a result, Heavy Metal is not simply translated, but Americanized, because the French idea of science fantasy is a bit different. However, it was evident right from the beginning it is the art that makes the magazine. Heavy Metal then went on a global talent hunt to develop new writers and artists to contribute to this new and unheralded magazine. Combining this international free-lance talent with the talent accumulated from across the U.S., Heavy Metal was ready to be launched.

It is estimated that there is a solid core of 100,000 dedicated science-fiction fans in this country, but Heavy Metal's format has a broader appeal. Heavy Metal puts the emphasis on the quality of the product. Heavy Metal is printed on coated matte stock with plenty of stunning four color. The emphasis is put on the "visual" aspect of its brilliant and intricate art. Extreme consideration is given to the reader, in that Heavy Metal has set forth an unprecedented format of never exceeding an 80/20 editorial/ad ratio.

Heavy Metal is not only a future fantasy magazine; it is a future reality part of publishing.
he unprecedented demand for Heavy Metal to broaden its horizons gave rise to many successful trade paperback books. Overdrive, Fifteenth Anniversary Anthology, Software, War Machine, Pin Up, and Greatest Hits are regarded as classics in this field. Many top motion picture studios, recognizing Heavy Metal as the frontrunner of the most unique and absorbing style of illustration, commissioned us to do the novelizations of some of Hollywood's biggest box office hits. Among our credits: The Book of Alien, 1941: The Illustrated Story, The Rose, and Alien: The Illustrated Story (which remained on the New York Times best seller list for 17 weeks).

Heavy Metal is a 25 year-old brand name that publishes nine issues of its magazine a year.

In 1981, Ivan Reitman produced the $7 million animated feature, Heavy Metal: The Movie. It was released through Columbia Tri-Star and grossed $28 million at the Box Office.

In 1996, the movie was re-released on home video for the first time, and not only did it sell two million copies, but it was the 10th best selling domestic video for the entire year.

The original movie soundtrack was produced by Irving Azoff, and released through Elektra Records. It went Platinum in its initial 1981 release. It has sold over 300,000 units since its 1996 re-release.

The original sound track featured artists such as Nazareth, Cheap Trick, Devo, Black Sabbath, Sammy Hagar, Grand Funk Railroad, Don Felder, Riggs, Trust, Blue Oyster Cult, Donald Fagan, Journey, and Stevie Nicks.
evin Eastmen, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, co-wrote and is producing the second feature film, scheduled for theatrical release the third week of August 1999.

Columbia Tri-Star will be releasing the film domestically. Canada's largest film company, Lion's Gate, will be releasing it there, and will handle the foreign sales.
The $15 million production has an extensive marketing and licensing program with over 30 licenses to date. Licenses include basis posters and T-shirts, a CD-ROM game, and a master toy deal. Product will begin hitting the streets in January 1999 and steadily build as major product lines are introduced through out the summer.
